As the Cincinnati Reds manage injury worries to infielder Matt McLain, they’ve gained previous Elite player Santiago Espinal from the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Toronto Blue Jays exchanged previous Elite player infielder Santiago Espinal to the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night.

In return, they gained pitcher Chris McElvain.

On social media, the Reds made the announcement:

The #Reds have gained IF Santiago Espinal from the Blue Jays in return for RHP Chris McElvain.
This move implies maybe one or two things for the two establishments.

1) Matt McLain, an infielder for the Reds, could be out of the team for a long time as a result of the acquisition. Although that is not known for sure, the breakout infielder from 2023 may need surgery to fix his ailing shoulder. However, with Noelvi Marte already out due to a PED suspension, the team clearly felt they needed infield insurance. Maybe McLain’s nonappearance won’t be a speedy one.

2) Espinal plainly wasn’t in the Jays plans during the current year. He was doing combating for an infield spot with Cavan Biggio, Davis Schneider and Eduardo Escobar, so this helps separate the logjam in the association. This could flag that Isiah Kiner-Falefa will be the group’s third baseman, with Biggio or Schneider conceivably getting approval at a respectable halfway point.

Espinal made the American Association Elite player group in 2022 when he hit .267 for the year with seven homers and 51 RBI. He played a more unobtrusive part in 2023, hitting .248 over only 93 games. He had only two grand slams and 25 RBI.

With respect to McElvain, he was an eighth-round pick of the Reds in the 2022 MLB Draft. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and has a 3.75 ERA in his career in the minors, going 5-5. In 96.0 innings, he has struck out 87 batters.
